Ravencoin and Virtual Reality (VR)

RVN is the perfect peer-to-peer money for virtual reality. Why? Because it is easy to get (tZero, Binance, Binance US, Bittrex, Sequoir, Guardarian, etc). It is easy to hold in wallets like Exodus, Trust Wallet, Stibits. It is quick, easy, and cheap to send any amount of RVN. I'm working with Virbela now to add Ravencoin addresses to user profiles. This would allow a right-click and Pay/Tip to pop up a Ravencoin address QR code. Easy, and simple.

Ravencoin and Coinbase?

This seems like a no-brainer to me. Ravencoin was created and launched without ever selling any RVN. All RVN is mined. The application has been submitted. Coinbase requires Rosetta-API to abstract the differences between different blockchain projects, so we've launched a project to get it working. New Monthly Ravencoin Foundation Meeting

The first Ravencoin Foundation meeting was very well attended and held on Discord (audio). This meeting clarified the role that the Ravencoin foundation plays. As it says on the website, the Ravencoin Foundation isn't Ravencoin. It exists to help the Ravencoin ecosystem. It was collectively decided to hold the meeting monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 3pm MT (5pm ET). Anyone is welcome to join, and ask questions. This time was chosen to balance between the needs of the US, Europe, and Asia which are all on very different time zones.

A Special Interest Group (SIG) is a self-assembled group that is working on their own aspects of Ravencoin, including improvements to core, an Electrum wallet for assets, Rosetta-API, and more. Each SIG will have their own meetings, repos, rules, etc. This model will let Ravencoin and its ecosystem grow more quickly, more organically, and more decentralized.

It's been an action-packed couple of weeks since the last update.

Foundation Funding

Because of generous donations by Blockchain Tiger, the Ravencoin Foundation is able to fund projects. The foundation has a legal fund that was raised early in the project that wasn't needed because of donations of time and effort by Doug and Josh. We have some additional funds from the security code audit that have increased in value. This, combined with the initial funding for the Ravencoin Foundation by Medici Ventures, is allowing the foundation to run nodes, APIs, and other important infrastructure that helps Ravencoin. Developers needed

The Ravencoin Foundation isn't directly hiring, but rather putting out bounties on issues and projects. But, there are a bunch of projects that need Ravencoin developers. Not having developers is slowing down some projects that want to tokenize and issue on Ravencoin. I'm asked frequently for more developers and I'm giving developer names to at least three different projects that are ready to hire. OpenDAO

This project will bridge RVN onto Ethereum and then provide the smart contracts to allows the creation of a ERC-20 stablecoin by borrowing against the RVN. Once activated, this is a great way to keep your RVN, and get stablecoins for your expenses. Unlike selling your RVN, there isn't a tax when you borrow against it. Just make sure the loan stays over-collateralized, or else someone else can pay off your loan and get your RVN at a slight discount.

RSK

RSK is an EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible smart contract platform with its own chain that is merge-mined with Bitcoin. Ok, that's a mouthful so I'll write an article on it later. Suffice it to say that there is the same pathway to put RRVN on RSK as there is for RBTC. The two-way peg would let you transfer your RVN to RRVN on RSK. This means that Ravencoin could soon be on a smart contract platform that isn't plagued by high GAS fees. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't understand RSK until I had a recent call with the RSK and Chainlink engineers.

NFT Frenzy

The NFT (Non-Fungible Token) space is going, going, sold. Ravencoin was doing NFTs before they were cool, but calling them Unique Assets. Ravencoin is a better platform for NFTs. Unique tokens that can certify ownership of art, and can also act as a certificate-of-authenticity from the artist. These are only 5 RVN to create (after you create your root asset) and can be permanently attached to digital files via IPFS.

Ethereum GAS Problem is Ravencoin Opportunity

Transfer Tool

There's a new tool for transferring assets in bulk. It takes a Comma-separated Values (CSV) file (in.csv) as input and sends assets to addresses that you specify. It can be used as an example of how to do it and build into your own service, or can be used as a component in back-end services. It will also write the transaction ids to out.csv. It is free under the most permissive MIT license.

12-words and a number

We're all familiar with the 12 words we write down to secure our crypto. What if we also wrote down a 3-digit number and it saved us hours and hours of frustration in the future.

What's the number for?

I'm proposing that wallets that generate a seed, which becomes your 12-words, also give you a number. The number is the number of weeks after Ravencoin's Genesis block.

Why? Because the wallets can be far more efficient at finding your funds. Remember that there was no possible way for funds to be in addresses generated from your 12-words before the random number that created the 12 words existed. So if we mark that time, we only need to scan the blockchain after that to look for funds.

Why record the number in weeks? Well this isn't a precise thing, so we just need an idea of where to start, but the number could, in the future, save us 27 years of blockchain we don't need to wade through to find the funds. The number is only 3 digits. This works best for SPV mobile wallets like RVN Wallet or BRD Wallet.

Here's the spec. It isn't specific to Ravencoin, except that the Genesis date is based on Ravencoin's birthday. It doesn't matter if you use it for other coins because the spec didn't exist before today anyway. Using 0 on Ravencoin Wallets will scan from Jan 3, 2018, the day the The Times wrote "Bitcoin is name of the game for new generation of firms." and we embedded the text into the Ravencoin genesis block to prove we hadn't pre-mined it. Using 0 on other wallets will scan through their entire blockchain.

Specification:

The Unix epoch is the time 00:00:00 UTC on Jan 1, 1970, and the Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since then.

Take the Unix timestamp for Jan 3, 2018 at 0:00 UTC

1514962800

Take the Unix timestamp for the date/time that the seed words are generated:

Now = 1616530560

Take the difference:

1616530560 - 1514962800 = 101567760

That gives you the number of seconds since the Genesis date (not necessarily the date and time of launch).

Divide the result by 604800

101567760 / 604800 = 167.936111111111111

Truncate after the decimal

FLOOR(167.936111111111111) = 167

That's the number that should be included after the 12-words

For the Wallets:

Take the number and multiply it by 604800 and add it to 1514962800, and start scanning blocks from there.

There's a few ways to go about this:

Estimate the starting block based on the coins block time. If the timestamps in the block header are before the calculated Unix timestamp, then scan from there. If less, then back up by some number of blocks and try again.
If the SPV has checkpoints, then use the closest checkpoint that has a timestamp in the block header that is before the Unix timestamp.

The Benefits

The number is optional. If the wallet doesn't support it, then the wallet scans from the beginning of the blockchain.
The number is optional. If the wallet does support it, and the user doesn't have it, then the wallet scans from the beginning of the blockchain.
The number is small, and unlikely to be written down wrong. Even ten years from now the number is: 689.
It will be a 3 digit number for another 15 years.
It gets more valuable over time, potentially shaving off ten or twenty years of blockchain to scan.
For someone restoring a recently created mobile wallet, this could save 18 hours of sync time -- every time it is restored.
The Unix timestamp is based off of UTC, so it is the same around the world. It does not factor in time zones.
By lopping off the decimal, the wallet is starting on average 1/2 week before the first transaction.
At-worst at the time of the transaction if the transaction was instantly put into a block and instantly mined. Clocks may be off, but are rarely off by much, and since transactions take time to be mined the transaction will almost certainly take place after the calculated Unix timestamp.
If, in the extreme case of the timestamp in the block being off (late) indicating to the wallet that it does not need to scan earlier, and the transaction was missed, then decrementing the number by 1 will solve it. This is an extreme case, and unlikely to ever happen.

Letter from the President - 2021-03-08

No, this is not a letter from Joe Biden.

Nor is it a letter from the President of Ravencoin. Ravencoin does not have a President because it isn't a company. Ravencoin is MIT licensed open-source code found here.

This is a letter from me, Tron Black, the current President of the Ravencoin Foundation. The Ravencoin Foundation is a non-profit that was formed to help the Ravencoin ecosystem. That's ya'll and all of your Ravencoin projects.

So if you read my letter last time, you know that the foundation has some funds we can use to help spur development. We tried using IPFS proposals on the website, but there were a few problems with that approach.

It isn't easy to update with new info and we ran into new info on proposal #002 - See Discord for discussions.
The proposal isn't near the project, and the various projects are in different repositories.
It isn't easy to update the status. If somebody started working on it, how would someone else know that?
There wasn't a way to get feedback on progress. Is someone still working on it? Is it done? Is it paid?

So I looked at Gitcoin which tries to solve some of these things, but it had some problems.

They take 10%.
It operates on Ethereum which has high fees at the moment.
They don't take RVN, so there's additional friction for conversions.

I'm proposing gitRVN which would be like the best parts of Gitcoin that monitors projects and e-mails updates about open projects, and times-out devs that take on a project and then don't complete it. I still like many of the features of Gitcoin. For the right team, I'd invest personally in a project like this that could be used by other teams to incentivize their projects using RVN. The downside, as pointed out by community members is that there are already devs hanging out with gitCoin, and not with gitRVN.

So, in an effort to deploy these funds, I started adding funding to issues on GitHub, in a machine-readable and human readable way. And tagging those issues with this tag so they are easier to find.

Hit me up if you have an important issue to be funded. Funding levels are currently guesstimates based on my experience and assuming the efforts of a reasonably experienced blockchain dev somewhat familiar with the project. Estimates like these are never an exact science even when there's an experienced team involved. Please forgive my errors.

This is a start. Github also tracks changes to issue comments (where the funding proposal lives), so people monitoring can see funding increases, status changes, etc. By putting the funding promise in GitHub issues, there can be comments, and a conversation can develop when needed. It isn't perfect, but it is a start. The next step is to be able to aggregate these funded issues and put them on the Ravencoin Foundation website. This may be manual at first, but can probably be automated with GitHub APIs in time.

What protects these funds for use in supporting the Ravencoin project? As President of the Ravencoin Foundation, I am a fiduciary. "A fiduciary is a person or organization that acts on behalf of another person or persons, putting their clients' interest ahead of their own, with a duty to preserve good faith and trust. Being a fiduciary thus requires being bound both legally and ethically to act in the other's best interests." - Investopedia In this case, I am obligated to use the funds to help the Ravencoin ecosystem because that's what the Ravencoin Foundation does.

Mobile Wallets

There has been a lot of discussion around the mobile wallets. I set up a new iPhone yesterday and used iOS RVN Wallet from the app store. I restored with my 12-words and started the sync from scratch. It took a long time to sync - about 12 hours, but it did sync, and I sent RVN as a test. It all worked. I agree it can use some TLC, but the iOS version works. I don't have an Android phone to test the Android version of RVN Wallet.

P2SH for Assets Status

The coding work for this is complete and paid. Because it affects consensus rules we'd like a security audit before merging the code and requesting the community to adopt the changes. We're talking to Kudelski Security on Friday to get a second bid.

Legal Opinion on Network-derived Funding

The legal opinion from Zuber Lawler, which was generously done pro bono, should be available this week or next.

OpenDAO and RVN

OpenDAO is working on allowing RVN to be used as collateral in the Defi space. This will open up opportunities for RVN HODLers to continue to hold their RVN while borrowing a stablecoin against it. This can have favorable tax advantages over selling RVN.

Ravencoin Interest Grows Exponentially

Since my last letter, Ravencoin hit an all time high. This has created a lot of extra demand on Ravencoin nodes, so I put out a Call for Full Nodes, and a post on How to Run Full Nodes. Some of the interest is because of the restrictions on stocks and Ravencoin's use as a platform for stocks that can't be naked shorted. Some of the interest is from Ravencoin's use as an NFT platform. Because of the renewed interest in the Ravencoin platform, I've been setting up more meetings and handling more calls from people wanting to issue on Ravencoin. With AlphaPoint adding support for Ravencoin, and CryptoSX supporting Ravencoin assets, it opens the door for more projects to use the platform.

Ravencoin RVN Listing Request

Ravencoin is a top 100 (often top-50, sometimes top-30) coin with a unique purpose. Anyone can issue assets on top of the platform. These assets are similar to ERC-20 tokens, but with some additional useful features like immutable meta-data about the token.

Ravencoin is over 3 years old. It has been running 24x7 since Jan 3, 2018 (Bitcoin's 9th Birthday). It runs on 1-minute blocks and 2x block size, so it has 20x bitcoin's native capacity. The halving schedule is similar to bitcoin's schedule when measured in calendar time. The first halving is expected around the 4-year mark, so early next year.

RVN was never issued via an ICO, and had no pre-mine. It has no regulatory overhang. It was fairly launched. RVN is a proof-of-work coin with an ASIC-resistant GPU algorithm that pushes the boundaries of modern GPUs. It is currently #2 for the most profitable coin to mine after Ethereum, so we're expecting an influx of miners because of EIP-1559.

Bruce Fenton, the founder of Satoshi Roundtable, conceived the project, and development was voluntarily contributed for three years by Medici Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Overstock.com.

The project has an ethos similar to Bitcoin, but a bit friendlier. It is very decentralized.

The Ravencoin Foundation has recently been established which currently operates on volunteer donations and was established to help the Ravencoin ecosystem. This non-profit was established in WY and is looking forward to the new banking options available there.

The trading volume is strong, with the strongest 24 hours exceeding $3.5 Billion traded. RVN trades on Binance, Binance US, Bittrex, and many other crypto exchanges.

Ravencoin began as a secure cryptocurrency initially based on the Bitcoin code, like Litecoin and others. RVN now also has demand coming from those wanting to create their own tokens. To create your own token, 500 RVN are burned, and the token name must be unique. Over 25,000 tokens have been created on the Ravencoin platform. We are not requesting Kraken to trade these user-created tokens.

A number of projects are already using the Ravencoin platform for NFTs, asset tokenization, proof-of-authenticity, and more.

A Call for Full Nodes

Full nodes are a bit different than just running Ravencoin Qt. There's just one extra step that makes it a full participant on the Ravencoin network. Open your network port for inbound connections -- see instructions near the bottom.

Every node tries to connect to other nodes. They start with a set of IP addresses that were hard-coded into Ravencoin core. This came from a list where we listened to the network and identified nodes that were open and reliable, and we added the IP addresses into a file, and built it into the binaries. This is how Bitcoin works. It was removed temporarily when Ravencoin launched because there was no network. Now that we have a great network, we added them back. This is the best configuration because we don't even know who owns these nodes, nobody does, which makes for very strong decentralization.

If none of those work, because they could get outdated, and those nodes could disappear, then Ravencoin Core looks at three domains:

seed-raven.ravencoin.org

These are now the fall-back position and include a large list of IP addresses that are (or were) active and open nodes included in the DNS table. If you run a stable node, then next time we update, your IP can be included.

If those domains and IPs aren't working, there's a way in raven-cli or the Debug console in Ravencoin QT to add nodes and manually connect to get it started.

The recent price increase (1500% or more) drove high demand for syncing Ravencoin nodes. This has led to some sync issues as we need more full nodes.

A full-node has an open port (usually 8767) for others to connect to. A seed node will give out the IP and port for other nodes and we need more nodes that accept inbound connections.

Here are some instructions (for Bitcoin) that show how to open your connection. This will help the network. If you're not a developer, this is a great way to contribute to the network.

The only difference here between a Bitcoin node and a Ravencoin node for networking is that you should use port 8767 instead of 8333.

Update: Some asked about the cost. You can run them on cloud services like AWS, GCP, Digital Ocean. You can also run them from home, just make sure you don't have overage charges on your home internet plan -- most don't.

Ravencoin - Recovering your RVN

This is meant to be a catch all blog post that can point you to different resources depending on your issue.

First, if you lost your wallet.dat, or your 12 words, or your encryption password for your wallet.dat, I cannot help you. Nobody can. Chalk it up to a learning experience. You're not the first, and you will not be last person to lose value because they misplaced or never backed up their private keys. That may be of little comfort if you feel you've lost a lot, but this "be your own bank" technology is not for the disorganized. I've seen many ignore my advice of writing down their 12-words when the value is under $10, and later kick themselves when it becomes life-changing value.

Ok, the rest of this post is broken up into sections. Find the header that most closely matches your situation.

You used the original Android Wallet and your funds don't show up in the new Android wallet

The original Android RVN wallet used a different derivation path, so the 12-words gave different addresses/keys.

You used the iOS Wallet with 12-word seed and new phone but you don't see your RVN

We tried to solve this one by keeping a flag on your phone and deriving BIP32 or BIP44, but on a new phone the flag is lost and you'll have the same issue as the Android phone above.

You have the RVN wallet and it isn't syncing

There are some issues with the RVN Wallet. Check some of the obvious measures like making sure RVN Wallet can use cellular data if you're on a cell network and not WiFi. Make sure you have a strong signal (LTE, 5G, WiFi)

If it still isn't working, it may not be connecting to good Ravencoin nodes.

Add IP address for a node:

In RVN Wallet, go to Settings->Advanced->Raven Nodes->[Manual Mode] and enter an IP Address and port of a good node. If you're not sure of the port number, then leave it blank or use 8767.
Add an IP address of an active node. Use this list: https://www.ravennodes.com/nodes/ or use 35.166.222.70

You have your wallet.dat and entered entered password on Ravencoin Core and it will not send RVN

This is a new problem we've seen.

Make sure your password is correct. Make sure you don't have CAPS-LOCK on.

Does your password (passphrase) have a space in it? If so and you're having trouble, e-mail contact@ravencoin.foundation. We haven't seen it a lot, in fact I only know of two at the time of this writing, but we're trying to find a common thread.

Other Solutions

If you have your 12-words and you've been using a newer RVN Wallet (iOS or Android), or Ravencoin Core, then your 12-words are compatible with the BIP44 spec. This allows you to use wallets that follow the same spec.

Also, your 12-words from Ravencoin Core should work with RVN Wallet (iOS and Android), and the other way around.

Also try these BIP44 compatible wallets that will accept your 12-word backup:

My Ravencoin Core stopped syncing, and I can't get it past block XYZ.

This can happen if you upgraded late and the chain forked, and your chaindata has some bad blocks, according to the new and improved consensus rules. There are some RPC calls and some tech-heavy solutions to remove just one offending block, but it is easier to do the following:

Locate your DataDir (see FAQ below)
Back up your wallet.dat file (important)
Remove all files in the DataDir except for wallet.dat, and let Ravencoin Core sync. This may take quite a while and depends on both the speed of your computer for signature and transaction verification, and also your Internet Provider's speed for block download.

I found my RVN using the https://ravencoin.org/bip44 site, but I can't sweep it with my Android Wallet.

There have been reports that the sweep causes a crash. Hopefully this is fixed now, or will get fixed soon, but here are some other options:

Use the iOS RVN Wallet to sweep the addresses instead.
Use the Desktop Core Wallet on Windows, Linux, or Mac. Go to Help->Debug Window->[Console], and type:

importprivkey <your private key> "" true

If you have lots to import, use "false" instead of "true" at the end to prevent it from re-scanning, and then on the last one, use "true" and it will scan through the blockchain to find the funds for the imported addresses. Once you do this though, you need to back up your wallet.dat because even if you've got it backed up with 12-words, the imported addresses are not backed-up by the 12-word seed.

Q: Where's my DataDir OR How do I locate my wallet.dat?

A: Your wallet.dat on your desktop or laptop is the file that stores the seed to generate a list of private keys, or that directly stores a list of private keys. It is in a different location depending on which operating system you're on:

Linux: ~/.raven
Mac: /Users//Library/Application Support/Raven
Windows: C:/Users//AppData/Roaming/Raven/

Q: What do I need to recover my RVN and Assets?

A: Just your wallet.dat and a passphrase (if you've encrypted it)

12-word seed phrase (you were given on mobile, or on newer Ravencoin core)

Q: How can I see if my RVN is in my wallet without syncing?

A: If you have 12-words, you can enter them at https://ravencoin.org/bip44

Q: What is sweeping vs. importing?

A: If you have your private key for an address, then some wallets will let you sweep it. The iOS RVN wallet will let you do this. Sweeping is where the wallet uses the private key, and takes all the funds (and hopefully assets) and transfers them to a new address for which your wallet has the private keys. There is a minimal transaction fee for this on Ravencoin.

Doing an import takes the private key and imports it into the wallet and the RVN stays in the same address, but now the wallet can spend from the address because it has the private key.

Q: What is a wallet vs. an address?

A wallet is a collection of addresses. The way these are stored can vary. Some wallets hold a list, some hold just a seed from which it can generate a list of addresses/private keys.

Q: What is the relationship between a Ravencoin address and a private key?

A: They are 1-to-1. If you have the private key, you can get the address. If you have only the address, you CANNOT get the private key.

Q: Why is there a password for the wallet.dat?

A: It encrypts the wallet.dat so that if someone steals that file, they can't spend your RVN. It is not required, but it is recommended.

Q: I have an address. How do I check if it has (or had) RVN in it?

A: Jump over to https://api.ravencoin.org and paste the address into the search bar. You'll see amount in and amount out and the total remaining in the address.

Q: Why are my funds in lots of addresses?

A: This is a normal thing. Most good wallets will use new addresses for each receipt so that it is harder to correlate personal information on-chain.

Q: Attempting to obtain private keys for a corrupted unencrypted Ravencoin wallet.dat file?

Make a copy of wallet.dat and place in walletaid folder.

Choose whether to dump all keys or search for specific key(s). We recommend searching for a specific public rvn address and associated private key to minimise the number of private keys import into a new wallet.

Open "foundkeys.txt" to see the recovered keys and addresses.
To import the found keys into a new wallet I would suggest using the below method.

- Close your wallet

- Press Windows+R

- Type %appdata%\Raven and press enter

- In that folder delete everything BUT NOT WALLET.DAT(!!!) Ensure even "corrupted" versions are backed up for potential future professional recovery. Move all wallet.dat files to another location.

Reinstall the Ravencoin QT wallet using newly generated seed words. Sync the blockchain completely.
Go to Help > Debug Window > Console. In the console type

importprivkey ############

Replace the hashes with the private key found in Step 9.

Please note that we recommend using the new 12 word seed phrases to protect your ravencoin wallet. Note the imported address are NOT protected by the seed words and therefore we recommend sending the ravencoin on imported addresses to another address in your new wallet that can be recovered using the seed phrase alone.

Cost to Transfer

The cost to transfer Ravencoin assets is much cheaper than ERC-721. The cost varies by load on the Ethereum network, and the network is currently at a pretty high load because of the popularity of DeFi lending, trading, etc. The cost of transfer could vary dramatically depending on the at-the-time load on the Ethereum network. If your token needs this DeFi network for its value, then you may want to bear this cost. But if your token is not dependent on the DeFi network which is mostly on Ethereum (currently), then Ravencoin assets transfer for a much lower cost.

Unique Names - Anti-Spoofing

Having a unique name for your token is important for two reasons. First, is to prevent fraud and spoofing using identically named tokens. Just like we all know that IBM on NYSE market is a specific company. Imagine if there were 14 different stocks named IBM, and the only thing that distinguished the company formerly known as International Business Machines was a 40 character hex that looks like this: 0x04abeda201850ac0124161f037efd70c74ddc74d, but there are thirteen others that could look similar. It can lead to fraud as other contracts with a name of IBM masquerade as the real IBM.

Ravencoin takes the unique name to another level by using only uppercase letters, underscore, and . (dot), and then puts in some rules that the . (dot) and the underscore can’t be at the beginning or end of the token name, and you can’t include consecutive underscores, or dots. This is to reduce the incidences of fraudulent tokens. By using i (lowercase) and I (uppercase) in a token, you can make it look similar (with most fonts). For example: IBM looks similar to iBM. The lowercase letters are excluded from token names. Note: Unique Assets (NFTs) have an expanded character set after the # which includes lowercase letters and symbols which can be mapped to serial numbers, and real-life assets.

Unique Names - Branding

The second reason that a guaranteed unique name is valuable to token issuers is that the brand can be built using the name. Your name is included in Ravencoin asset browsers. Also, once trust is built in your root token name, then all sub-tokens can be trusted. This can be used by token issuance platforms that issue sub-tokens. For example: Let’s say TIP build their brand for [T]oken [I]ssuance [P]latform. Then you’d know that all sub-tokens like TIP/GREATCOMPANY and TIP/PROPERTY_DEAL are issued by the root token holder that owns TIP!

Purpose Built

Ravencoin asset issuance platform is purpose built for asset issuance. So much so, that the core software that anyone can download for free has a built-in user interface for creating assets. The core software also has RPC calls to create and transfer assets so it can programmed or scripted for full automation.

Ethereum, by contrast, runs a generic virtual machine, and the ERC-721 contract is just a template smart contract (program) that can be used to issue and transfer assets. The name of this instance of the ERC-721 contract is the 40 character name referenced above as the identifier of the token. The higher cost of operation is because the virtual machine of every computer runs the ERC-721 contract to effect transfer.

Sub-Assets

Ravencoin has sub-assets, and these assets can only be created by the owner of the root asset. This allows some interesting NFT token configurations. Because root token owner is the only one that can create sub-assets, they can franchise, or back the sub-assets.

The ART token owned by a gallery, can create sub-tokens for each artist, and artists can create NFTs (Unique Assets) for each art piece. Using sub-tokens isn’t required, but can add a level of trust of authenticity.

Multiple levels of sub-assets can be created up to 30 characters.

Meta-Data

One challenge with assets is knowing the commitment or promise behind the token. This can lead to fraud if the promise of the token is separated from the token itself.

Ravencoin assets can be created with an IPFS content id that is embedded into the blockchain. Because of the way IPFS works to reference the file information with the hash (content id), it makes it impossible to edit the meta-data associate with the Ravencoin asset. This information is standardized and available through various Ravencoin asset explorers. The meta-data can be PDFs, movies, text files, or even entire folders or websites that convey the meaning and purpose of the issued asset.

Because Ethereum smart contracts are programs, it is possible modify the contract to add meta-data in a non-standard way, and some non-standard contracts have done so. Since it isn’t in the standardized smart contract, it isn’t exposed via standard explorers.

Memos

Memos in Ravencoin are immutable IPFS data added to any transaction. This extra data can be used by the issuer to link initial issuances back to internal records, to publicly record cost-basis information, record 'rule 144’ restrictions, include information about legal status, include details of rewards or dividends, or mark transactions as required.

UTXO Model

This may or may not be helpful for every project, but there is additional tracking of assets in Ravencoin because it stores all UTXO (Unspent Transaction Outputs). Every transaction (issuance and transfer) is stored in its own digitally signed transaction. The sum of these UTXOs for an address is the address balance, and the sum of all UTXOs for all addresses for an asset will always match the issuance plus re-issuances and so all assets can be audited with an open-source script.

Summary

Ravencoin unique assets are objectively better for almost every use-case than ERC-721 where interaction with DeFi isn’t necessary or desired. As part of the protocol, Ravencoin will ensure that there is only one unique asset with a given name.

Second Letter from The President

This is the second letter from the Ravencoin Foundation. I hope to add a place on the Ravencoin Foundation website where these can be posted.

It has been a great couple of weeks for Ravencoin and a lot has changed for Ravencoin in the last few weeks.

The foundation has held weekly board meetings. We make meeting notes public here. These will be a week or two behind because they're not published until the previous week's meeting minutes are approved.

The foundation is now helping to coordinate development bounties. There isn't a development team in the foundation. There may be someday, but currently the foundation is coordinating proposals, donations, approval of pull requests, and payments from the donations. This can also be done through Gitcoin, and others in the Ravencoin ecosystem are working in that direction. If you're a developer, choose from either, or both.

The most recent development of adding P2SH support for assets is code complete and is just waiting for a security review. This important update will provide the needed technical capabilities for Ravencoin assets to be added to AtomicDEX and for multisig support for Ravencoin asset storage. We're currently working on additional estimates for a third-party security review for this important code addition.

We're beginning to plan a virtual Ravencoin Meetup. COVID set back our plans last year for our annual meetup. Stay tuned for more information. It will likely be held using Spatial.io which is a VR environment that also lets you connect with a Desktop/Laptop or mobile phone if you don't have a VR headset. The Quest 2 which doesn't need a computer is $299, is a good choice to join using VR, but most other VR headsets will work.

The Ravencoin Foundation board held their last board meeting in Spatial.io, and I haven't laughed that much in a long time. Participants show up with their own face, but as a legless torso with simulated arms and the arms don't always look natural. It led to some amusing moments with arms protruding from our faces when controllers were set down. Imagine listening to a serious proposal or motion to vote from someone with a forearm sticking out of their forehead.

On the legal evaluation of the network-derived funding to support the foundation, Josh Lawler at the law firm Zuber Lawler has generously agreed to analyze this option and give an opinion on the legal impact. This is being done "pro bono" (for free) which is amazing, extremely unusual, and very helpful for the foundation. Thank you to Josh Lawler and to Sarah Fernandez. We expect to see the results of the analysis over the next few weeks.

The price of RVN recently hit its all time high. While we don't focus directly on the price, it is an excellent proxy for the value of the Ravencoin ecosystem activities and is also influenced by the crypto market in general. In this case, we have both. Everyone who held RVN is up. Thanks for being a part of this amazing project and participating in the community.

People have reached out and asked me why the price is going up. My answer? Hard to say whether it is part of the general bull market, the possibility of a Coinbase listing, the new foundation, the generous donations to the foundation, the P2SH modification allowing new capabilities for assets like multi-sig and cross-chain operations, the Tinaga Land Resort tokenization, the Millennium Sapphire tokenization, the acknowledgment that $RVN can outperform $DOGE, or maybe some of all of these.

With the new all time high $RVN price, I've also been asked a lot recently about where to buy RVN. Here's a list.

The board has discussed and approved a crypto treasury management policy of balancing the crypto accounts between RVN, BTC, and a stable coin. This is to remove some volatility and allow the foundation to meet its obligations for proposal payments which are priced in USD.

Inaugural Letter from the President

This is the first letter from the Ravencoin Foundation. It will be longer than most because there's a lot to cover.

First, it is important to note that the Ravencoin Foundation is not Ravencoin. Ravencoin is open-source software that volunteers run to create a network of nodes that constructs a massively replicated blockchain-based ledger for RVN, and for any other asset tokens that get created by the network users.

The Ravencoin Foundation is a non-profit organization that endeavors to assist and protect the Ravencoin open-source project. It also provides a legal entity that can hold development funds, apply for signing keys and certificates, hold App Store accounts, run Ravencoin explorers, monitor the network, and communicate a shared vision for the project.

The Ravencoin Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit in the state of WY and now holds online accounts and assets that were formerly held by Medici Ventures. Medici Ventures helped pay for the creation of the Ravencoin Foundation and funded the foundation with $125,000 at the end of 2020. Blockchain Tiger and others have made additional generous donations.

The Ravencoin Foundation temporary board consists of myself (Tron Black), Jeremy Smith (CTO of Medici Ventures), and Doug Pepe (founder of Mango Farm Assets). The executives are me as President, and Jesse Empey as Secretary, Treasurer, and VP.

A website exists, but isn't complete. https://ravencoin.foundation. We have been working with some very talented volunteer designers from Medici Ventures on the website, but the recent dissolution of Medici Ventures might affect that going forward.

There is currently no Ravencoin development team. I will review PRs to Ravencoin core along with other technical community members. I'll prevent fast and loose changes to the code by requiring review time before merges to the main branch and require extra time and scrutiny for any changes that impact consensus or the core network protocol.

The Ravencoin Foundation is evaluating the pros, cons, and ramifications of allowing the network itself to help fund core development, and development of 2nd layer tools. If this looks like the best route for the Ravencoin network, then the foundation governance will be further distributed. Then, if the network participants go along, the economic actors transition, and miners vote with their mining hash power on the network-derived funding proposal the network could self-fund its own development. This has been done by at least one other project already, the BCHA (Bitcoin Cash ABC) project, but there wasn't enough consensus for that change to remain the majority chain. Using BIP 9 activation rules in the code, we can assure that a large majority is in agreement before any transition takes place.

The Ravencoin Foundation will also help connect people and projects together. Since the open-source software itself can't make introductions, the Ravencoin Foundation can be a meeting place for Ravencoin connections to be made. The Code Security Audit

The Ravencoin community raised funds to do a code security audit. The funds, totaling USD$40,000, were collected in four Ballet wallets held by trusted members of the Ravencoin community. The firm Independent Security Evaluators https://ISE.io was selected.

The security evaluation has been going. We've been told the report will be ready between December 28th and December 31st. Once the report is released, it will be made public for the benefit the Ravencoin community. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

The Legal Fund

Early in Ravencoin's history, exchanges required a legal opinion on whether RVN is a security in order to list the RVN crypto-currency. Funds were raised and held in a 3 of 5 multisig by Ravencoin community members. Ultimately those funds were not needed as Doug Pepe voluntarily provided the detailed analysis that was needed without taking the funds. These funds have been sent to the Ballet wallets of the four trusted community members, and are currently expected to be used for future security code audits should they be needed.

The Ravencoin Foundation

Medici Ventures is stepping back from paying developers to work on Ravencoin. Medici Ventures is helping to form and initially fund The Ravencoin Foundation. $125,000 will be available to the foundation at the beginning of 2021. Seed-nodes, API cloud servers, and some network monitoring servers will transferred to the Ravencoin Foundation starting in January of 2021. The Ravencoin Foundation is a non-profit established in WY (crypto-friendly jurisdiction) and is filing for 501(c)(6) tax status. A small temporary board of directors has been set up, and a website is being created. The goal of the Ravencoin Foundation is to support the open-source Ravencoin project, and to educate about Ravencoin's potential. More info on this to come. The Ravencoin Foundation does not own the open-source Ravencoin project, it is there to support the project, help connect Ravencoin resources (developers, projects, issuers, code, HODLers, miners), and benefit the Ravencoin ecosystem.

Dev Meetings

Stability of Consensus Protocol

Ravencoin has reached a stability level in its core consensus code. Unless bugs are found, it is unlikely to be changing at the consensus level. This doesn't mean there aren't improvements to be made in wallets, rpc calls, zmq, qt, gui, 2nd tier, etc. The exposure of the messaging and memos in mobile wallets, and GUI core are still needed.

Infrastructure Decentralization

In the transition from Medici Ventures to the Ravencoin Foundation, the goal has been to make the Ravencoin project less dependent on any entity. The IP addresses of publicly accessible nodes from around the globe have been added in to Ravencoin 4.3.2.1, and the same IP addresses have been added to fall-back domains which should never be needed in ordinary circumstances. This is simply getting back to the design that Bitcoin uses, which was unable to be used during Ravencoin's launch, but is the preferred way to run a fully decentralized open-source system.

Ravencoin has several different types of assets that are used for different purposes.

Assets = Issuable, and transferable tokens with a unique name in the root namespace. The first one to register a name gets it. Create as many as you want. Can be indivisible, or divisible up to 8 decimal places.

Sub-Assets = Tokens that you can create under a token that you own. If you own APPLE, you can create new tokens under it. Multiple levels up to 31 characters.

Ravencoin - Emergency Update

Recently our community members from the CryptoScope team, developers of Solus Explorer [https://rvn.cryptoscope.io], reached the Ravencoin team with the findings that Ravencoin blockchain has a vulnerability which was used by unknowns to mint RVN that goes beyond the coinbase of 5000 RVN per block.

Thanks to the CryptoScope team that brought it to our attention and kudos to them and their technology for detecting the exploit. After identifying the vulnerability, Ravencoin development and CryptoScope team coordinated to avoid the leakage of the possibility to exploit the vulnerability and Ravencoin development team immediately started code review to detect, isolate and fix the issue.

A community code submission caused a bug that has been exploited. Law enforcement has been notified and is working with us.

The vulnerability does not allow the stealing of RVN or assets that you own and control, but the minting did create RVN that should not exist. We've discussed the impact of the extra RVN and what can be done. Because those RVN were transferred to an exchange and traded, they are mixed with other RVN and therefore any programmatic attempt at burning them, with miner and community backing, would cause irreparable harm to innocent victims. As it stands, the burden has been shared across all RVN holders in proportion to their RVN holdings in the form of inflation.

The vulnerability does not impact Ravencoin assets, so all asset balances are safe. As we are transitioning from the vulnerable code to fixed code, there may be some chain instability. Please keep transactions to a minimum until the chain is stabilized and miners are using the updated software.

The open-source and decentralized nature of this project prevents a quick and easy fix as we only develop source code, and do not operate the network. We are notifying the exchanges so they can determine whether to pause their deposits, withdrawals or trading. We are requesting that mining pools immediately upgrade to the latest binaries available at: https://github.com/RavenProject/Ravencoin/releases/latest

What about everyone else? It is wise to be on the newest Ravencoin version, but once the miners have updated, then fraudulent transactions will not be included in mined blocks, and so the original Ravencoin binaries will work without requiring an upgrade.

The extra RVN represents approximately 1.5% of the final 21 billion. The exact final number isn’t known yet. Another way to think about it is that it represents about 44 extra days' worth of mining. These extra RVN appear to have been sold into the market shortly after minting, so the economic damage has already been absorbed by the Ravencoin ecosystem. As it stands, the RVN will continue to exist and that new total RVN number will be 21 billion plus the exploit minted RVN. Another option for adapting to the excess issuance is shifting the halving 44 days sooner which would offset the minted RVN and put the total issuance back to 21 billion should the community and miners consider this a better option.

We are choosing not to publish the exact details of the vulnerability until the fix is distributed and the Ravencoin blockchain is stabilized. It's our intention to first release details of the fix to developers that have forked Ravencoin code, and then shortly thereafter we will publish complete information about the exploit.

As you can imagine, this is difficult and embarrassing for the Ravencoin team. There are hundreds of tests that automatically run every time new code is submitted but this critical flaw was not caught. The team understands this incident’s impact, as trust is such a critical element of the space. A full report of how this happened, and what steps will be taken to prevent something like this from happening again will be released as soon as the network is stabilized.

There is no mechanism to notify everyone at once. Ravencoin is, at its core, a complete ledger of all transactions, so if the network can’t be stabilized, it will be restarted at a specific block. Minimizing transactions until network stability is reached is recommended.

I’ll provide more information as we learn more.

Ravencoin - BIP44

What’s BIP44? It is a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 44 and it specifies a particular way of deriving public keys and private keys from a master key. But even better than that, it works together with BIP39 and BIP32,

Well that’s a lot of useless technical jargon…. What good is it and how does it help Ravencoin?

Ok, before I get there, let’s start with just a tiny bit of background so the remainder of this article will make sense.

Almost everybody knows that you need a private key, preferably held by you, to spend Bitcoin, or even better, to spend Ravencoin. A private key is just a huge random number that nobody knows but you. There’s lots of ways to generate this number. If you want, you can flip a coin two hundred and fifty-six times, or you can roll dice one hundred times. Or, for most of us, we just let the computer do it for us. This gives a number between 0 and roughly 115792089237316000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000. That’s a big number, and it needs to be big because if someone guesses it, then they take your Bitcoin, or even worse, your Ravencoin. The number is 1.157x1077and is pretty close to the number of atoms in the known universe. You can think of your Ravencoin’s safety as hiding all your RVN as an atom somewhere in the known universe. Sure, someone can start searching, but where to start?

Since the best practice in both Bitcoin (BTC) and Ravencoin (RVN) is to not re-use addresses or keys, then you need lots of these random numbers. And in early incarnations of Bitcoin, the software would create 100 of them at a time. That way, there was a bunch of them to draw from. That was great, UNTIL you needed address 101. Sure the software was smart enough to create another 100 addresses, but it wasn’t smart enough to tell you that none of the backups you made and carefully stored in safety-deposit boxes, safes, and bunkers are out-of-date. Any Bitcoin or change received to those addresses are at-risk. Yes, before you ask, lots of Bitcoin was lost that way.

Enter BIP32 to the rescue. Using almost magical math which enabled by Elliptic Curve Cryptography, you can store just one master private key, and from that key, you can derive as many private keys and as many matching public keys as you’d every need. This amazing breakthrough was added to Bitcoin core, and subsequently copied by Ravencoin (legally under the MIT license of course). At the bottom of Bitcoin core, or Ravencoin core, in the status area you’ll see [HD] to indicate that it is using Hierarchically Derived keys.

That might be the end of the story, except two other breakthroughs were adopted by mobile wallets, and by some multi-coin desktop wallets. Let’s start with the multii-coin idea. Somebody figured out that since you can derive from a single master key as many private keys as you’d ever need, they came up with a way to break those up and use a different set for each coin you want to store in the same wallet. Brilliant. And, they went a few steps further by breaking those into accounts so you could store your fun crypto money separately from your business crypto money, and then further breaking those up into receive addresses and change addresses. This is BIP44.

So take a wallet like the Edge wallet. It can store lots of different coins, including Bitcoin and Ravencoin. Or for your desktop, a wallet like Exodus wallet can do the same. They use a different number for each coin and that list is public.

Ok, great, so now all we need to do is store a great big random number? Yep. So why are the wallets asking to write down 12-words? Great question! Because it is easier and less error prone to write down 12-words.

So how do words turn into a huge random number? Another great question. That is BIP39. It does two things, it turns words into numbers and numbers into words. How? First take the number and turn it into binary (the native tongue of computers). You’ll have a bunch of 1's and 0’s. Then group the 1’s and 0’s into groups of eleven. Each group of 11 maps to one of 2048 words. Or the other way around, each word maps to eleven 1’s and 0’s.

Examples:

00000000000 = "abandon" (word 0)

00000100000 = "advice" (word 32)

11111111111 = "zoo" (word 2047)

What if the number of bits don’t divide equally by eleven? No problem, the extra can be used as a checksum, which can often catch some errors in writing down the words.

Is everyone using a list of English words? Nope, there are words for English, Korean, and lots of other languages.

Ravencoin Core - BIP44

Ravencoin core is going to default to using BIP44 starting with version 4. The iOS and Android RVN Wallet is already BIP44, and Mango Farms web wallet is also BIP44.

If you’ve already created a wallet before the version 4 release, then it will continue to use just the BIP32 HD derivation and should be backwards compatible with your existing wallet.dat file. If Ravencoin core does not find a wallet.dat, it will prompt you and give you 12-words to write down as your backup. You should still encrypt your wallet and never forget your password.

Ravencoin uses decimal 175 as its coin index. The good multi-coin wallets will use this list so there is compatibility between wallets.

What this means for you is that if you write down your 12-words and keep your password, you don’t have to store your wallet.dat (for new wallets created in version 4+). One exception is if you import a private key using importprivkey. Then you’ll need to back up the wallet.dat because there’s no way to include the imported private key into the derivation, and it has to be stored separately. Better, easier backups for everyone, and compatibility with most mobile wallets.

The BIP44 UI needs some improvement, but it is functional.

The mining algorithm is replacing x16rV2 with an algorithm that is optimized for modern GPUs. The algorithm is a derivative of Ethash, further enhanced to be optimized for GPUs to progPOW, and then further refined to fix some bugs, and make some Ravencoin specific changes and is called KAWPOW. This algo is now running on Ravencoin’s testnet and will be introduced to the mainnet code on April 15th for activation on May 6th. A BIP44 compatible core wallet is in testing. It will work on mainnet, but has not been well tested yet, so be careful. The default for a new wallet will be done via 128-bit seed value, presented as 12-words. The words should be compatible with other BIP44 wallets including mobile RVN Wallets (iOS and Android). Tagging of Ravencoin addresses with a #KYC tag can solve a real problem in the tokenization space — a vast improvement over whitelisting ETH addresses.

On Friday, February 7th at 6:15 EST on block 1092672, and just fifteen minutes before the beginning of Satoshi Roundtable, the Phoenix update of Ravencoin went live on mainnet. It took almost a month to activate. It used BIP9 activation which waited until 85% of the mined blocks were using the new software. Then at a boundary where the block height is evenly divisible by 2016, it triggered, and then 2016 blocks later, it activated. The activation went smoothly so Tags, Restricted Assets, Memos, Messaging, Dividends and 32-byte txid compatible meta-data all went live.

The testnet has five features (Messaging, Memos, Tags, Restricted Assets, Rewards/Dividends) waiting to go live on mainnet. Messaging does not include the user interface for messaging, but does include the protocol and consensus elements.

Ravencoin Mining

Ravencoin mining isn't for everyone, but it can be very rewarding.

What is mining?  Mining is just running software on your computer that verifies Ravencoin transactions. To prevent bad actors from mining and blocking transactions, each mining computer works on a puzzle.  First to solve the puzzle (each minute) gets 5000 RVN.

Most miners work together to solve the puzzle and then split the reward.  This is called pool mining.

Mining works best if you have a graphics card (from NVidia or AMD).  Lots of computers, especially gaming computers will have a graphics card.  You can mine without a graphics card, but it is much more efficient with one.

How to mine:

  * Pick a mining pool.

  * Install the software.

  * Add your account name, and Ravencoin address (to be rewarded), and run the software

That's it.
